Words by Han McGufficke & Sophie Chauncy

It’s that time again, fresh studio walls, new good vibes, STUNNING pieces of art. We are stoked to be sharing that our newest feature artist is a gorgeous girl from the little town of Morundah, over near Coleambally. Sophie Chauncy. Soph’s vibe really fits here, think Murrumbidgee River, bushland, birdlife and the gorgeous Riverina landscapes.

An Intro From The Artist Herself..

My name is Sophie! I am 25. I am a full time practicing artist based out of my home/studio on the Yanco creek in Morundah. Population 24! I grew up on a farm in Coleambally then later moved to a spot on the river in Darlington Point with my family.

I studied at National Art School in Sydney, being a country girl however, the big smoke was too hectic so I moved to Wollongong, a much more casual town on the coast where I finished my degree and worked out of my own studio for a couple years.

Since moving back to the Riverina at the start of the year, I have loved working within the landscape I grew up in and know so well

The Jouney & The Inspiration.

Sophie always loved to draw, from a young age, but growing up wasn’t sure if making a career out of art was stable enough. But, with the support of her family, Sophie started that career, creating commission pieces, hosting art workshops for women in rural area’s and with the help of social media the business starting growing.

“I also think that rural communities are incredibly supportive and encouraging of their local artists, so that has a lot to do with where I am today!” We couldn’t agree more Soph, nothing like small community spirit.

You just have to look at these pieces to see where the inspiration comes from.. The Riverina, our backyard. The native bushland, birdlife, rivers and creeks and the colours of the land.

What Has Your Heart?

We asked Sophie to share what type of work ‘has her heart‘. What she really enjoys to do when she spends time in her little art studio

“I am really loving watercolor and mixed media, on both canvas and paper at the moment. The Australian bush has been a recurring theme in all my work, yet like any artist, the desire to explore and experiment was pushed in my final years of university. It wasn’t until a wonderful uni lecturer introduced me to watercolour and encouraged ‘freeing’ up my style

As for the subject, the unique Australian landscape has my heart. Anything from the rolling hills of Gundagai, to the Murrumbidgee River, to the Hay Plains, I am always in awe of. I am still a little bird obsessed (in case anyone hasn’t noticed), so I enjoy including anything to do with birds.”

We know that you have probably been looking for something gorgeous to hang on that empty wall at home, well I think Sophie has exactly the piece for you. We are just beyond excited to be launching our new artist.

So why not join us on exhibition night and celebrate our newest feature artist, Sophie. We can’t wait to see you there!

Big love. Em xx
